How Often Should Business Backups Be Tested?
By Brady Phenicie · July 2, 2026 · 4 min read
Short answer
Most small businesses should test critical backups at least quarterly and after major system changes. Businesses with compliance, medical, legal, accounting, or high downtime risk may need more frequent testing.
What a test should prove
A backup test should prove that files can be restored, permissions make sense, recovery time is acceptable, and the right people know the process.
A backup that has never been restored is only a hope, not a plan.
What to document
Document the date, system tested, data restored, time required, issues found, and next steps. This also helps with insurance and compliance conversations.
FAQ
Is checking that backup jobs completed enough?
No. Job success is useful, but restore testing proves whether the backup is actually usable.
